How to make a WhatsApp link

1. Choose your country. The country code is added for you.
2. Type your WhatsApp number the way you normally write it. Spaces, dashes, brackets and the leading zero are removed automatically.
3. Optionally write a message. It will already be typed in the chat box when someone opens your link. They still have to press send themselves.
4. Copy the link, download the QR code, or copy the HTML button for your website.

How the link works

WhatsApp’s “click to chat” links have a simple shape:

After wa.me/ comes the full number in international format: country code first, then the number, with no plus sign, no zeros in front, no spaces and no dashes. After ?text= comes the message, URL-encoded so that spaces, line breaks, emoji and symbols such as & and # survive the trip. This tool does the encoding for you.

Anyone who taps the link opens a chat with that number, even if it is not saved in their contacts. On a computer it offers WhatsApp Web or the desktop app.

A worked example

If you type a number that begins with a plus sign, the tool treats it as a complete international number and ignores the country list.

Where to use your link and QR code

• Instagram, TikTok and Facebook bios: paste the link so followers can message you in one tap.
• Your website: paste the HTML snippet where you want the green button to appear. It is a plain link with inline styling, so it needs no script.
• Print: put the QR code on a shop counter, menu, flyer or business card. Customers scan it with their phone camera. Print it at least 2 cm wide and test it before you print many copies.

Setting greeting, away and quick replies in WhatsApp Business

The templates above are meant for the free WhatsApp Business app, which has three messaging tools in the Business tools section of its settings:

• Greeting message: sent automatically when someone messages you for the first time, or after a long period with no conversation.
• Away message: an automatic reply for times you cannot answer. You can have it always on, set a custom schedule, or send it only outside the business hours in your profile.
• Quick replies: saved messages with a shortcut. In a chat you type / and pick one, which suits order confirmations and price replies.

Edit a template here, press Copy, then paste it into the matching tool in the app. The exact wording of menus changes between app versions and between Android and iPhone, so look for the names above rather than a fixed path. Automatic replies are only sent while your phone has an internet connection.

Tips and limits

• The link works only if the number has an active WhatsApp account. This tool cannot check that.
• Your phone number is visible inside the link, so only post it where you are happy for people to see it.
• Keep pre-filled messages short. Very long messages make the QR code dense and harder to scan.
• In a few countries the leading zero is part of the international number. If that applies to you, type the full number with a plus sign in front.
