How words and characters are counted
- Words are groups of letters or numbers separated by spaces. Hyphenated words like “well-known” count as one word.
- Characters include every letter, number, space and punctuation mark. Many forms and social networks use this count.
- Reading time assumes about 238 words per minute (the average adult silent reading speed), and speaking time about 150 words per minute.
