What makes a password strong?
- Length beats complexity. Each extra character multiplies the number of guesses needed. Aim for 16 or more.
- Randomness. Passwords generated here use
crypto.getRandomValues, the browser’s cryptographically secure random generator. - Unique for every site. If one site is breached, reused passwords let attackers into your other accounts.
How strength is measured
The meter estimates entropy in bits: the length multiplied by log₂ of the size of the character pool. 60+ bits is strong for most accounts, and 80+ bits is very strong. The crack time assumes a fast offline attack of 10 billion guesses per second.
Use a password manager (such as Bitwarden, 1Password or your browser’s built-in one) so you only need to remember one master password, and turn on two-factor authentication.

How long should my password be?
At least 12 characters, and ideally 16 or more for important accounts like email and banking.
Should I include symbols?
They help, but length helps more. Some sites limit symbols, so untick them if a site rejects the password.
