How to compress a video
- Choose your video. It opens in the player so you can check it’s the right one.
- Pick a quality and resolution. 720p with Balanced quality is a great starting point.
- Press Compress video, keep the tab open, and download the MP4 when it’s done.
What makes a video smaller?
- Resolution: going from 4K or 1080p down to 720p usually cuts the size dramatically, and still looks sharp on phones.
- Quality: this controls how much detail the encoder keeps. “Balanced” is hard to tell apart from the original on most screens.
- Efficient encoding: the result uses H.264 (MP4), which is often much smaller than phone camera files while playing everywhere.
- Audio: 96 kbps is plenty for most videos, and removing audio helps for silent clips.

How to compress a video for email
Most email services limit attachments to around 20–25 MB in total. To get a video under that:
- Choose 480p and Smaller file, and set audio to 64 kbps.
- If it’s still too big, cut the video into shorter parts and send them separately.
- For long videos, a cloud link (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox) is often easier than an attachment.
Good to know
- The first use downloads the video engine (about 31 MB). It’s cached for next time.
- Video compression is heavy work. A computer is much faster than a phone, and short clips finish quickest.
- Only need part of the video? Cut it first, then compress the shorter clip. It’s much faster.

How do I reduce a video’s file size?
Lower the resolution (720p is ideal for phones) and choose Balanced or Smaller file quality. Most phone videos shrink by 50–90%.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. Compression runs in your browser with FFmpeg WebAssembly. Your video stays on your device.
Why is compression slow?
Re-encoding a video takes a lot of processing, and browsers are slower than desktop apps. Shorter clips, lower resolution and a computer all help.

MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, which plays on almost every phone, computer and app.
Can I compress a video for WhatsApp?
