How to read a multiplication chart

Find the first number on the left, then move across to the column of the second number. Where they meet is the answer. For 7 × 8, go to row 7 and across to column 8: 56. The shaded diagonal shows the square numbers (1, 4, 9, 16…).

Tips for learning times tables

Start with the easy ones: 1, 2, 5 and 10. Then 3, 4 and 11.
Use the swap rule: 3 × 7 is the same as 7 × 3, so you only need to learn about half the chart.
9s trick: for 9 × n, the tens digit is n − 1 and the digits add up to 9 (9 × 6 = 54).
Practise a little every day, for example five minutes before school.

Which times tables should children learn first?

Most start with 2, 5 and 10, then 3, 4, 11, and finally 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12.

Yes. Choose 1 to 20 and press Print.
