What is CGPA?
CGPA stands for cumulative grade point average. Universities in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Malaysia and many other countries grade each semester with an SGPA (semester grade point average), then combine every semester into a CGPA that appears on your final transcript and degree.
CGPA formula
CGPA = Σ (SGPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ semester credits
Semesters with more credits carry more weight. If every semester has the same number of credits, this is the same as a simple average of your SGPAs.
Worked example
| Semester | SGPA | Credits | SGPA × credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 7.8 | 20 | 156.0 |
| 2 | 8.4 | 22 | 184.8 |
| 3 | 8.9 | 24 | 213.6 |
| Total | 66 | 554.4 |
554.4 ÷ 66 = 8.40 CGPA. A simple average of the three SGPAs would give 8.37, slightly different because semester 3 had more credits.
How to convert CGPA to percentage
There is no single worldwide formula. These are the most common methods:
| Scale | Method | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 10-point | CGPA × 9.5 (CBSE, many Indian universities) | 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8% |
| 10-point | CGPA × 10 (simple) | 8.4 × 10 = 84% |
| 4-point | (CGPA ÷ 4) × 100 (approximate) | 3.2 ÷ 4 × 100 = 80% |
| 5-point | (CGPA ÷ 5) × 100 (approximate) | 4.1 ÷ 5 × 100 = 82% |
Many universities publish their own conversion formula or table (for example, using a different multiplier or subtracting a constant). For job applications and admissions, always use your university’s official method and state it next to the percentage.
Tips for improving your CGPA
- Your CGPA changes more slowly each semester, so early semesters matter a lot. Aim high from the start.
- High-credit core subjects affect your CGPA the most. Prioritise them.
- Use this calculator to set a target: add a future semester with the SGPA you are aiming for and see where your CGPA would land.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA (semester grade point average) is your result for one semester. CGPA (cumulative grade point average) combines all the semesters you have completed so far into one number.
How do I calculate CGPA from SGPA?
Multiply each semester’s SGPA by its total credits, add the results, and divide by the total credits of all semesters. If every semester has the same credits, you can simply average the SGPAs.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
On a 10-point scale, the most common method is CGPA × 9.5 (used by CBSE and many Indian universities). Some universities simply multiply by 10, and others use their own formula, so check your university’s official rule.
How do I convert a 4.0 CGPA to percentage?
A simple approximation is (CGPA ÷ 4) × 100. For example, 3.2 ÷ 4 × 100 = 80%. Many universities publish their own conversion table, which you should use for official documents.
What is a good CGPA?
On a 10-point scale, 8.0 and above is usually considered very good, and 9.0+ is outstanding. On a 4-point scale, 3.5+ is very good. Many employers and master’s programs ask for at least 6.0/10 or 2.5/4.
