How the final grade formula works
Needed on final = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight
Example: your current grade is 85%, the final is worth 20%, and you want 90%: (90 − 85 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = (90 − 68) ÷ 0.2 = 110%. That’s not reachable without extra credit, so a 90 isn’t realistic, but an 85 target only needs 85% on the final.
Tips before your final
- Check the syllabus for the exact weight. Some courses use categories (homework, quizzes, exams) instead of a single current grade.
- Look at the table of other targets to set a realistic goal.
- Ask your teacher about extra credit or dropped scores if the number looks impossible.

Frequently asked questions
What if the result is over 100%?
Then that target can’t be reached with the final alone. Aim for a lower target or ask about extra credit.
What if the result is negative?
You’ve already secured that grade. Even a zero on the final keeps you there, though you should still take it.
Does this work for weighted categories?
Yes, as long as your current grade already reflects everything except the final.
