Logo Design Skill: How to Install and Use It With Claude
By Shah Rukh, software developer · · 7 min read
Logo Design Skill is a free, open-source add-on that teaches Claude, or another AI agent that supports skills, to design logos step by step and save them as SVG files. This guide covers what it is, what you need, how to install it on Windows and Mac, how to use it, and the precautions to take first.
Read this first. This is not a logo maker app or website. It is a folder of instructions and small Python scripts that only works inside an AI agent you already have, such as Claude Code or Claude Desktop. The skill is free, but the agent is a separate product and may need a paid plan. The skill’s own notes also say it cannot guarantee that a logo is free of trademark conflicts.
What Logo Design Skill is
A “skill” is a folder with a file called SKILL.md that an AI agent reads when a task matches. This one tells the agent to act like an identity designer: ask about your brand, write several ideas, draw three of them as SVG (a picture format that stays sharp at any size), test them, and show them to you.
The repository contains three things:
| Part | What it is |
|---|---|
SKILL.md and references/ | The workflow and 14 guides on principles, colour, typography, testing, redesigns and delivery |
scripts/ | Python tools that check an SVG, build test sheets and presentation boards, render PNGs and export icon sets |
assets/library/ | 1,432 real-world SVG logos with a catalogue, used only as study material |
The skill always pauses at a “checkpoint”. It shows the concepts in one overview image with a recommendation, and builds the full kit (colours, lockups, icons, guidelines) only after you pick a direction. The plugin file lists the version as 1.4.4. It is an independent project by a GitHub user named kaankiziltug, not made by Anthropic, Google or OpenAI.
What you need
- An AI agent that supports skills. The README names Claude Code, Claude.ai, Claude Desktop, Gemini CLI, Codex CLI, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode. The repository lists no prices for these; check the plan of the agent you use.
- A model that can view images. The project says the skill works best this way, because it renders its own drafts to PNG and checks them before showing you anything.
- Python 3.8 or newer for the scripts. They use only the standard library, so there is nothing to install with pip.
- A renderer for PNG and ICO files. The scripts use whichever of these they find:
cairosvg,rsvg-convert, Inkscape, a Chromium-based browser (Chrome, Edge, Brave) or macOS Quick Look. If you have Chrome or Edge, you are covered. - Git, only for the manual install.
No API key, account or server is needed by the skill itself.
Precautions before you install
- Do not copy the library logos. The 1,432 logos are trademarks of their owners. The project’s
TRADEMARKS.mdsays the MIT licence does not cover them and that they are for study only. Don’t use them in your own designs or marketing. - Check your new logo before you use it. The skill states it can’t guarantee trademark clearance and recommends a professional search (trademark databases, reverse image search). Do this before printing or registering anything.
- Check font licences. The skill notes that a font’s licence must allow logo use. Ask the agent which fonts it assumed.
- Your brief goes to the AI provider. Whatever you type, including an unreleased brand name, is sent to the company behind your agent. Don’t share a client’s confidential plans without permission.
- The agent runs scripts on your computer. The scripts are plain Python and can be read in the
scripts/folder. Work in a separate folder, and read each permission prompt before you approve it. - Only use the real repository: github.com/kaankiziltug/logo-design-skill.
How to install Logo Design Skill in Claude Code (Windows and Mac)
This is the method the project recommends. The commands are typed inside Claude Code, so they are the same on Windows and Mac.
- Open Claude Code in your terminal.
- Add the project’s plugin marketplace:
/plugin marketplace add kaankiziltug/logo-design-skill
- Install the plugin:
/plugin install logo-design@logo-design-skill
- Start a new session and ask for a logo.
How to install it manually on Mac
- Press Cmd + Space, type Terminal and press Enter.
- Download the repository:
git clone https://github.com/kaankiziltug/logo-design-skill.git
- Copy the skill folder into your personal Claude Code skills folder, so it works in all projects:
cp -r logo-design-skill/skills/logo-design ~/.claude/skills/logo-design
- Or copy it into one project only. Run this from inside that project’s folder:
cp -r logo-design-skill/skills/logo-design .claude/skills/logo-design
The same commands work on Linux.
How to install it manually on Windows
The project does not document a separate Windows copy command. Its cp -r examples are written for Mac and Linux shells. On Windows the simplest routes are the plugin commands above, or the zip upload below. The git clone command itself works on Windows if Git is installed.
One Windows detail is documented: the skill file says python3 is often only a Microsoft Store stub on Windows, so use python or py -3 in every command instead. The project’s automated tests run on Windows, macOS and Linux.
How to add it to Claude.ai or Claude Desktop
- Open the project’s Releases page and download
logo-design.zip. - In Claude, go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the zip.
- If the upload has a size limit, use
logo-design-lite.zip. It leaves out the SVG logo files and the gallery, and keeps the catalogue, scripts and guides.
You can also build both zips yourself from the downloaded repository. They are saved in a dist folder:
python3 tools/package_skill.py
Gemini CLI, Codex CLI and other agents
Clone the repository, then copy the skills/logo-design folder into your agent’s skills folder.
| Agent | Personal folder | Per project |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini CLI | ~/.gemini/skills/logo-design (or ~/.agents/skills/) | .gemini/skills/logo-design |
| Codex CLI | ~/.codex/skills/logo-design | .codex/skills/logo-design |
| Cursor, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode, others | See your agent’s skills documentation | Usually a skills/ folder in the project |
cp -r logo-design-skill/skills/logo-design ~/.gemini/skills/logo-design cp -r logo-design-skill/skills/logo-design ~/.codex/skills/logo-design
How to use it for the first time
Start a new session and just ask. The README says the skill triggers on requests about logos, wordmarks, monograms, brand marks, app icons, favicons, rebrands and critiques. Two of its example prompts:
- Design a logo for Harbor, a savings app for first-time savers. It should feel calm and safe.
- Turn this symbol into favicon, app icon and one-colour versions, plus a one-page usage guide.
What happens next, according to the project:
- Brief. It asks a few questions, at most five in fast-track mode, or states its assumptions.
- Research. It looks up what logos in your category usually look like, so yours does not blend in.
- Concepts. It writes 8–12 one-line ideas and builds three in SVG.
- Tests. It audits each file and checks it at 16 px, in one colour and reversed.
- Checkpoint. It shows the concepts and stops. You pick one, ask for changes, or ask for the kit.
Useful scripts you can run yourself
Open a terminal in the skills/logo-design folder. On Windows, replace python3 with python or py -3.
| Task | Command |
|---|---|
| Check an SVG and get a score out of 100 | python3 scripts/svg_audit.py my-logo.svg |
| Make a 512 px PNG | python3 scripts/render_png.py my-logo.svg --size 512 -o my-logo.png |
| See which renderers were found | python3 scripts/render_png.py --which |
| Export a favicon and web icon set | python3 scripts/export_variants.py my-logo.svg --web-icons |
| Search the library by technique | python3 scripts/search_library.py --technique negative-space --exemplary |
The --web-icons option writes favicon.ico, PNG icons, site.webmanifest and a head-snippet.html file. You can also open assets/library/gallery.html in a browser to look through the library.
Update and uninstall
The project does not document update or uninstall steps. For a manual install, the skill is just the logo-design folder you copied, so it stays as it is until you replace it with a newer copy.
Common problems
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
python3 does nothing or opens the Microsoft Store on Windows | Use python or py -3 instead, as the skill file advises. |
| No PNG is produced | Run render_png.py --which. If it lists none, install Chrome or Edge, or run pip install cairosvg. |
| The zip is too big to upload | Upload logo-design-lite.zip instead. |
| The agent does not use the skill | Start a new session and use the word “logo” in your request. Check the folder is named logo-design and contains SKILL.md. |
| PNGs on Mac have a white background | Quick Look renders on white. The script recovers transparency only when Pillow is installed, or use another renderer. |
| The agent builds only three concepts and stops | That is the checkpoint. Pick a direction and ask for the full kit. |
This guide is based on the project’s repository as it was on October 2, 2026 (latest change: September 30, 2026). The skill text, scripts and catalogue data are under the MIT licence; the library logos are not. If a step looks different, follow the README on GitHub. ToolsCloset is not connected to the project or to Anthropic. Claude is a trademark of Anthropic.
Frequently asked questions
Is Logo Design Skill free?
Yes. The skill text, scripts, templates and catalogue data are published under the MIT licence. The AI agent you run it in, such as Claude Code or Claude Desktop, is a separate product and may need a paid plan. The repository does not list any prices.
Is it a logo generator website?
No. It is a folder of instructions and Python scripts that an AI agent loads. You need an agent that supports skills, and the logo is drawn by the model as SVG code.
Can I use the logos in its library?
No. The 1,432 library logos are trademarks of their owners and are not covered by the MIT licence. The project includes them only for studying how logos are built.
Is a logo made with this skill safe to register as a trademark?
Not automatically. The skill itself says it cannot guarantee trademark clearance and recommends a professional search of trademark databases plus a reverse image search before you rely on a logo.
Does Logo Design Skill work on Windows?
Yes. The project tests its scripts on Windows, macOS and Linux. On Windows, use python or py -3 instead of python3. The README’s manual copy commands are written for Mac and Linux, so the plugin install or zip upload is easier on Windows.
Do I need to install Python packages?
No. The scripts need Python 3.8 or newer and only the standard library. For PNG and ICO export they use a renderer already on your computer, such as Chrome, Edge, Inkscape, rsvg-convert, cairosvg or macOS Quick Look.
What files do I get at the end?
After you approve a concept, the skill can produce SVG variants in black, white and one brand colour, square, favicon and app-icon versions, PNGs, a web icon set with favicon.ico and a web manifest, a presentation board and brand guidelines.
