How zakat is calculated

  1. Add up your zakatable wealth: cash, bank savings, gold and silver, shares, business stock and money owed to you that you expect back.
  2. Subtract debts and bills that are due now.
  3. Compare the result with the nisab, the minimum amount of wealth that makes zakat due.
  4. If your wealth has been above the nisab for one lunar year (hawl), pay 2.5% of it.

Zakat = (Zakatable assets − Debts due) × 2.5%

What is the nisab?

The nisab is the value of 87.48 grams of gold (7.5 tola) or 612.36 grams of silver (52.5 tola). Because silver is much cheaper, the silver nisab is lower, so more people pay zakat and more reaches those in need. Many scholars recommend it for mixed savings; others use gold. Enter today’s price per gram from your local market or bank, since prices change daily.

What is usually not zakatable

This calculator follows the common method. Opinions differ on things like jewellery worn daily, retirement funds and long-term debts. Please ask a scholar you trust about your own situation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the zakat rate?

2.5% (one fortieth) of your net zakatable wealth, once it has been above the nisab for a full lunar year.

Should I use the gold or silver nisab?

Both are valid opinions. The silver nisab is lower, so it includes more people; many scholars recommend it when savings are in cash.

Do I pay zakat on my house?

No. The home you live in, your car and personal belongings aren’t zakatable. Property bought to resell is.
