How to calculate a discount

Sale price = Original price × (1 − Discount ÷ 100)

Example: $80 with 25% off: 80 × 0.75 = $60, so you save $20.

Stacked discounts aren’t added together

“25% off plus an extra 10%” is not 35% off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price: 80 × 0.75 × 0.90 = $54, which is 32.5% off in total. The calculator shows the real combined discount.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 30% off?

Multiply the price by 0.70. For example, $50 with 30% off costs $35.

Is tax added before or after the discount?

Usually after. Sales tax is charged on the discounted price, which is how this calculator works.

How do I find the original price from the sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount). A $60 item at 25% off was 60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.
