How much should you tip?

Customs change, so treat these as a guide. Always check whether a service charge is already on the bill before adding a tip.
Easy tip maths
For 20%, move the decimal point one place left and double it: on a $64.50 bill, 10% is $6.45, so 20% is $12.90. For 15%, add half of 10% to 10%: $6.45 + $3.23 = $9.68.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Traditionally the tip is based on the amount before tax, though many people tip on the total for simplicity.
How do I split a bill with different tips?
Work out each person’s share of the bill, then add their chosen tip percentage to their share.
Is 18% a good tip?
Yes. In the US, 18% is a solid tip for good restaurant service; 20% or more is generous.
