How WPM is calculated
WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
In typing tests, a “word” is any 5 characters, including spaces. That way long and short words count fairly. Only correctly typed characters count toward your score, and accuracy shows the share of your keystrokes that were right.
What’s a good typing speed?

How to type faster
- Learn touch typing. Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF JKL;) and don’t look at the keyboard.
- Accuracy first. Speed follows once your fingers learn the right keys. Fixing mistakes costs more time than typing slowly.
- Practise little and often. Ten minutes a day beats an hour once a week.
- Sit well. Wrists straight, screen at eye level, feet flat.
Frequently asked questions
Is 40 WPM good?
Yes. 40 WPM is above average and enough for most jobs. Data entry and transcription roles often ask for 50–60+.
Why can’t I paste into the box?
Pasting is disabled so the test measures real typing.
Does it work on phones?
Yes, though phone keyboards are slower. Most people type 30–40 WPM on a phone.
