How to make a GIF from a video
- Choose a video and play it to find the moment you want.
- Press Use current to set the start, then choose the length.
- Pick a width and frame rate, then press Make GIF.
The first time you use this tool, your browser downloads the media engine (about 31 MB, FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly). It’s cached afterwards, so later uses start quickly. A computer is much faster than a phone for long files.
Keep GIFs small
- GIFs get big fast. Keep clips under 5 seconds when you can.
- 480 px wide and 12 fps is a good balance for chats and social media.
- Fewer colours make smaller files, but may show banding on gradients.
