How to download a YouTube thumbnail

Open the video on YouTube and copy its link from the address bar or the Share button.
Paste the link into the box above and press Get thumbnails.
Pick a size and press Download. On some phones the image opens in a new tab instead. Press and hold it, then choose Save image.

The tool accepts normal watch links, short youtu.be links, Shorts, live streams and embed links.

Older or low-resolution uploads may not have a maximum resolution version. The tool marks those as unavailable.

Making your own thumbnails

If you’re a creator, YouTube recommends custom thumbnails of 1280 × 720 pixels (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide, in JPG, PNG or GIF format. Clear faces, big readable text (three to five words) and strong contrast usually get more clicks. Downloading your own past thumbnails is a quick way to review what worked.

Can I use someone else’s thumbnail?

Thumbnails belong to the video’s creator. It’s generally fine to view or save them for personal reference, research, or when you’re writing about or linking to the video. Don’t reuse them as your own, in ads, or on products without the creator’s permission.

Some videos, especially older ones, don’t have a 1280 × 720 version. Use the standard or high-quality size instead.

Can I download the video itself?

No. This tool only shows thumbnail images. Downloading videos without permission goes against YouTube’s Terms of Service.

What size should my own YouTube thumbnail be?

YouTube recommends 1280 × 720 pixels in a 16:9 ratio, at least 640 pixels wide.
